Forex Trading

The Forex market, also known as “Foreign Exchange”, or the “FX market” is the largest and most liquid market in the world. This market is traded globally by traders who focus on the buying and selling of currencies. It is made up of different market players including banks, hedge funds, international companies, central banks and brokers. This financial market is an “OTC market”, which stands for Over-The-Counter, meaning; it is unregulated – not overseen by an exchange.

“THE FOREX MARKET IS ONE OF THE MOST LARGEST AND MOST LIQUID IN THE WORLD”

In this market, traders use a standard unit of measurement called a “lot” (100,000 units). Many brokers also offer mini-lots (10,000 units) and micro-lots (1,000 units).

When investing in the FX market, you are not investing in a single currency, but a currency pair. For instance, if you believe that the EUR will strengthen against the USD, you will then buy the EUR/USD currency pair, which means you are buying the EUR while simultaneously selling the USD. In our EUR/USD example, the EUR is the base currency, and the USD is the quote currency.

This popular trading ground has a very high daily trading volume, which eliminates any market liquidity issues – at least for the currencies of the most powerful economies. These pairs are referred to as majors. You can also trade the currencies of less developed economies such as with the minors and the exotics.
